Debbie Shrimpton Illustrates School Workshop Visits
Invited as a local Artist, Debbie visits Primary Schools to inspire Year 3-6 children with her story of how you can create a career and business from your love of drawing and creativity.
Debbie has taken part in several School Art Weeks as a visiting local illustrator and also run workshops to support schools in the National Gallery's Take One Picture initiative.
Debbie shares a presentation with classes or year groups showing examples of her work, photographs of her home studio, videos of how she does her illustrations and her background as a Fashion Designer.
She then runs workshops teaching children
how to draw from observation
understanding perspective
colour blocking
mark-making
encouraging freeness and enjoyment in art
Each child ends thers workshop with their own unique piece of artwork combining all the skills they have learned and most importantly gets to sign their masterpiece.
Please get in touch to discuss arranging a visit to your school. Debbie will work with each school to choose a local landmark relevant to the children as their subject for drawing.
Workshop plan
- Introduction to the task, talk about perspective, colour blocking, mark making and line width variation
- Each child would need an A4 sheet of card or sketch book weight paper. I do a step by step demonstration of how to draw with perspective splitting up the page into sections and drawing in pencil, creating rough guidelines by observing shapes and considering the position of subject.
- Using watercolours I teach them to apply block colour their artwork using fast and free brushstrokes
- A short break to allow watercolours to dry
- Introduction to mark making, line art and applying texture on top of their watercolours.
- Summary, looking at what worked well and how they applied the learned techniques to successfully add interest to their artwork.
- Each child ends thers workshop with their own unique piece of artwork combining all the skills they have learned and most importantly gets to sign their masterpiece.
Materials required - paper, pencils, watercolours, black fine liner pens of two different nib widths.
